Why prepare for pregnancy?

Your health matters

Research has shown that the health of both biological parents at the time of conception impacts the future health of the child. By making positive lifestyle changes before you start trying to conceive, you can give your child the best possible start in life.

It doesn’t always happen easily

One in six Australian couples will have difficulty conceiving. By learning as much as you can about your body and undertaking preconception health checks when preparing for pregnancy, potential fertility issues can be identified and managed earlier, making your fertility journey easier in the long run.

Set yourself up for success

Preparing for pregnancy is a great time to prioritise your mental and physical health. Taking positive steps to improve your health can reduce complications in pregnancy and can mean you’re a healthier parent for your future child.

What to expect from the Ready. Set. Baby! program

Mind

Your mindset matters when it comes to preparing for pregnancy. How you think and feel can influence how your body responds.
Stress and anxiety activate your body’s “fight or flight” mode, a state that can interfere with hormonal balance and make it harder to conceive.

That’s why we encourage you to focus on mental wellbeing as part of your fertility preparation. The Mind section of the Ready. Set. Baby! program includes guidance on:

  • Building emotional resilience when trying to conceive

  • Understanding the mind–body connection

  • Practising relaxation techniques such as mindfulness and breathwork

  • Managing expectations when things don’t go to plan

Remember, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone. Our experienced counsellors are here to help you manage the emotional side of fertility planning. Learn more about our psychological care services and how they can support you before, during, or after treatment.

Body

When preparing for pregnancy, your physical health plays a crucial role and that includes both partners.
Healthy women provide the best environment for conception and pregnancy, while healthy men produce stronger, more viable sperm. Small, consistent changes in your daily routine can make a big difference to your reproductive outcomes.

In the Body section, you’ll find practical, evidence-based advice to help you:

  • Nourish your body with fertility-friendly nutrition and meal plans

  • Maintain a balanced exercise routine that supports hormonal health

  • Reduce exposure to lifestyle factors that can impact fertility (such as alcohol, smoking, and high stress)

  • Understand the importance of a healthy BMI in conception and pregnancy outcomes

You’ll also receive a free fertility cookbook, created by our Monash IVF nutrition experts, filled with recipes designed to support hormone balance and reproductive wellness.
