Mandatory Pre-Treatment Counselling (VIC)

What you need to know BEFORE your mandatory counselling session/s:

1. Counselling is required before accessing treatment
  • Counselling is a legal and regulatory requirement before accessing certain Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatments in Victoria.
  • You may have questions about this requirement, which are answered below.
2. Privacy and Confidentiality in Counselling [please read!]
3. Sessions via online video-link
  • Please treat these sessions the same as you would an in-person session.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure:
    1. - you are able to connect to the session
      - you have a private space to talk for the duration.
      - you have no distractions and your camera on.
4. When additional counselling and/or further information may be required:
  • It is not uncommon for people wishing to access ART treatments to be dealing with other issues that can also impact, or be impacted by: ART treatments, outcomes, pregnancy, birth and/or parenting.
  • If so, the doctor/clinic must ensure that undertaking treatment meets legal requirements - this usually involves requesting additional relevant information.

5. If you have had mandatory pre-treatment counselling previously:
  • You can supply documentation of this counselling to the clinic, which MAY be able to reduce your mandatory counselling requirements at Monash IVF (VIC).
