If you've picked up a paper or tuned into the news over the last week, it's very likely that you've caught a story about donor sperm.

From questions around the quality of international sperm, to celebrity pregnancies, it certainly feels like using an anonymous sperm donor is a hot topic of discussion.

The reality is that for some individuals and couples, creating a family is only possible with the use of donor sperm.

It can be a difficult space to navigate but – rest assured – our fertility experts have developed a world-leading donor program to help.

There are a number of different types of sperm donors available to Monash IVF patients. Some people may choose to use a known donor. Others may go down the path of using an anonymous donor, through our clinic-recruited or international donor program.

Only the highest quality of donors are available through the Monash IVF donor program.

These donors have an altruistic desire to help others.

All donors undergo a comprehensive screening and selection process to ensure they meet strict quality and safety standards.

In NSW you can access an international donor through our partnership with the California Cryobank, the world's largest bank of sperm. Founded in 1977, California Cryobank is an international sperm banking leader, and the largest company of its kind in the world.

International donors are specifically selected for our donor program and comply with all Australian legislative requirements.

All donors of sperm must meet strict health, education, height, and weight requirements before they are even considered for the qualification process. The screening process includes repeated semen quality tests, physical examination, communicable disease testing, genetic testing, psychological screening and criminal background checks.

The donors who make it through this stringent process are of the highest quality. In the end less than 1% of applicants qualify to join the Cryobank program.
