Acupuncture for Fertility

Explore the evidence on acupuncture for IVF and fertility. Learn how it may support stress management, blood flow, hormone regulation and embryo transfer outcomes.

Acupuncture is a complementary therapy that some Monash IVF patients use alongside their fertility treatment. It is a system of treating overall health that involves the placement of very fine needles in specific points on the body. Traditionally, acupuncture is believed to activate meridians or energy channels in the body (which align with nerve pathways) to improve energy flow in the body. This is then thought to balance the various organs and systems in the body and to improve circulation.

It’s debated whether acupuncture works in the way it claims; however, what we do know is that many people use acupuncture to support their health, and some say that they notice a difference in their well-being. Scientific studies on acupuncture have shown some improvement in symptoms and health parameters, such as improved blood flow and reduced stress markers. Since 2010, Monash IVF has been working alongside The Fertility Pod for acupuncture, and many of our patients have reported feeling more relaxed and ready for fertility treatment.

What is Acupuncture for Fertility?

Fertility acupuncturists select body points aimed to improve blood flow to the pelvis, modulate the nervous system and influence hormonal regulation. Small studies support some changes in blood flow and neuroendocrine markers, but these mechanisms have not been definitively shown to translate into higher live-birth rates.

Similarly, small studies have reported changes in stress-related hormones (cortisol, prolactin) after acupuncture in IVF patients, suggesting an effect on the stress axis — but these are limited studies and not proof of improved live birth outcomes. The importance of acupuncture for women's health, particularly in supporting fertility and reproductive wellness, is increasingly recognized. Don’t worry–needles are not placed in the reproductive areas of the body!

Acupuncture and IVF – What You Need to Know

Studies are varied regarding acupuncture and IVF outcomes. Some research shows fertility acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine may improve IVF outcome, whereas other studies show no noticeable difference. In the context of in vitro fertilization, acupuncture is often used as an adjunct therapy to support fertility treatment and potentially improve IVF success rates. One study indicates that acupuncture reduces stress and anxiety prior to an operation (such as an embryo transfer). Which is one of the reasons many patients choose to receive acupuncture on the day of embryo transfer!

Acupuncture as an adjuvant for IVF treatment can be done in the weeks and months leading up to a cycle, started during a cycle itself, or even just done on the day of an embryo transfer–it is up to each individual patient what they choose. Acupuncture performed before, during, and after IVF stimulation is often recommended to support the overall IVF cycle and optimise fertility outcomes. Some patients may only start to receive acupuncture after they know a transfer is successful, to support them in the first trimester of pregnancy. However, research does seem to indicate that having a few sessions of acupuncture is more beneficial than just a one-off.

At Monash IVF we collaborate with The Fertility Pod to offer acupuncture on site at our Cremorne and Clayton clinics in Victoria–for acupuncture in the lead up to, during, and after an IVF cycle, as well as acupuncture on the day of an embryo transfer (before and after the transfer). Acupuncture for embryo transfer is done in the day surgery, right where the embryo transfer is done. Acupuncture treatment can be tailored to different stages of IVF, including embryo transfer, to help improve blood flow, reduce stress, and support implantation. Many patients have shared with the Monash IVF nurses and doctors how acupuncture helped them relax on the day of their embryo transfer.

Does Acupuncture Help Fertility?

Current research is mixed on whether acupuncture directly improves fertility outcomes. Some studies suggest it may help with stress reduction, relaxation, and general wellbeing, which can be valuable during fertility treatment, but it should be viewed as a complementary support rather than a proven fertility treatment on its own.

If you’re considering acupuncture, use it alongside, not instead of, medical care at Monash IVF. Always discuss your plans with your fertility specialist so your care remains personalised, coordinated, and appropriate for your individual situation.

Risks and Considerations

Acupuncture is considered safe when performed by a trained and experienced practitioner. Some of the risks of going to an unqualified and inexperienced acupuncturist are unhygienic practices, non-fertility specific acupuncture points, or that they are not familiar with the IVF and ART procedures and therefore cannot support patients adequately during this time. Monash IVF collaborates with the acupuncturists at The Fertility Pod, who are all highly trained and experienced in acupuncture for fertility and specifically in supporting patients who are going through IVF or ART. If you are seeing any complementary health practitioner, such as an acupuncturist, or taking supplements, it is important to discuss this with your fertility doctor at Monash IVF. If you have a bleeding disorder, you should consult your doctor before starting acupuncture to ensure it is safe for you. Always share your full medical history with your fertility team so they can provide the most appropriate care. Additionally, considering lifestyle factors—such as diet, exercise, and stress levels—is an important part of a comprehensive fertility care plan.

Fertility Acupuncture and Stress Reduction

Fertility acupuncture offers a holistic approach to reproductive health, with a particular focus on reducing stress and supporting individuals throughout their fertility journey. For many people undergoing IVF treatment or trying to conceive naturally, stress and anxiety can become significant barriers to achieving their fertility goals. Elevated stress levels can disrupt hormonal balance, interfere with the menstrual cycle, and even impact sperm quality, all of which can reduce the chances of conception. Regular acupuncture sessions are known to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

Beyond the physical benefits, fertility acupuncture provides valuable emotional support. Working with a qualified acupuncturist, individuals can develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses their unique fertility needs, whether they are undergoing IVF, preparing for embryo transfer, or trying to conceive naturally. Many patients benefit from integrating complementary therapies such as herbal medicine and lifestyle counselling alongside acupuncture, creating a comprehensive fertility plan tailored to their specific goals.

Research suggests that incorporating fertility acupuncture into an IVF treatment plan can improve IVF outcomes, including higher clinical pregnancy rates and live birth rates. A systematic review of studies found that women who received acupuncture during their IVF cycle experienced better pregnancy rates compared to those who did not. While more research is needed to fully understand how acupuncture affects reproductive outcomes, current evidence supports its use as an adjunct therapy for those undergoing assisted reproduction.

By taking a holistic approach and working with a qualified practitioner, individuals can enhance their fertility care, potentially increase their chances of successful conception, and promote overall well-being throughout their fertility journey. Whether as part of an IVF cycle or for those trying to conceive naturally, fertility acupuncture offers a valuable complement to traditional fertility treatments.

Acupuncture at Monash IVF

Monash IVF follows an evidence-based model for fertility and acknowledges that while more research is needed for acupuncture and fertility, many patients report a benefit. Since Monash IVF prioritizes each patient's care and experience, we work alongside other complementary health practitioners to provide comprehensive care.

In Victoria, Monash IVF offers acupuncture as an add-on service on the day of embryo transfer in the day surgeries in Cremorne and Clayton. This means that patients can receive fertility acupuncture before and after the embryo transfer right in the same location as the transfer itself. Acupuncture is also available at Cremorne and Clayton in the lead up to, during, and after IVF or ART.
