An important goal of IVF is to ensure that the oocytes (eggs) that are collected have the best chance of being fertilized and producing a healthy pregnancy. However some oocytes can have an abnormal number of chromosomes (called “aneuploidy”) which is a leading cause of IVF failure and early pregnancy loss. It is also the major cause of female infertility and reduced IVF success rates in older women. Therefore it is important to ensure that the healthiest oocytes are collected to maximise the chance of a successful pregnancy.

Most women undergoing IVF require ovarian stimulation using FSH injections to produce enough oocytes to be fertilised in vitro. This research project aims to ensure that ovarian stimulation methods are optimal and produce the best quality oocytes for IVF treatment. The STREAM study is a prospective, multicentre, randomised controlled trial that will compare oocyte quality between two commonly used ovarian stimulation regimens. Oocyte quality and aneuploidy will be assessed in selected oocytes using the most sophisticated methods of preimplantation genetic screening, including next generation sequencing and mitochondrial copy number.


Recruitment for this study is ongoing and is offered to patients receiving treatment at both our Clayton and Richmond clinics.
