Why low carbs?

Who doesn’t love carbs?! We need them in order to replenish glycogen to store for energy. The issue isn’t carbs themselves but how much and what type we’re eating.

Research from the Nurse’s Health Study shows that carbohydrate choices also influence fertility. Around 30% of infertility is found to be caused by ovulatory failure. The study showed that eating lots of easily digested carbs such as white bread, pasta, potatoes and soft drinks increased the odds of ovulatory infertility due to their effect on insulin resistance. Carbohydrates determine your blood sugar and insulin levels and if these rise too high they will disrupt the balance of hormones needed for reproduction.

So eating small amounts of ‘slow carbs’, such as whole grain breads and pastas, will help to control blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of hormone imbalances. This is a good practice to get, as following this type of diet will help lower your risk of gestational diabetes once pregnant.
