Saddened to hear of the recent passing of Sir Robert Edwards

The staff and doctors at Monash IVF were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Sir Robert Edwards whose pioneering IVF work has helped bring more than 4 million children into the world.

Sir Edwards and Dr Patrick Steptoe’s inspirational work in the early 1960’s led to a breakthrough in the development of in vitro fertilisation, which resulted in the birth of Louise Brown in 1978 – the world’s first “test tube baby”. Professor Edwards won the Nobel prize in 2010 “for the development of in vitro fertilisation” and a year later was knighted for “services to human reproductive biology”. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends during this difficult time.
